SPOTLIGHT ON: Locketship.

In this series, we meet the designers behind the POOL brands for a special look into what it takes to be an independent designer.

1. Tell us about yourself! What is your brand’s product? Locketship is a handmade jewelry line that is best described as whimsical and colorful. It’s my brainchild and passion, and it really highlights individual style. I work hard to create unique pieces that feature original artwork and the cutest photography I can take and find.

2. What sets your product apart from the crowd? Everyone has his or her own personal style, and I believe that style should be appreciated. What sets Locketship apart is that instead of using a traditional locket, which hides its contents, I turn lockets “inside out” and use open-faced pendants. This allows everyone who wears a Locketship piece to display something they love wearing and their individual style at the same time. I believe Locketship’s artwork makes it stand out, too. Recent designs have featured everything from animals in space and cat heads on ice cream cones to unicorns and dinosaurs.

3. As independent designers, how did you get into the business? I graduated from FIDM LA and have always designed and sewn my own clothing. I started making custom jewelry pieces for friends and family, and I received great feedback. I slowly began to design and develop a signature line. Creating a brand is a long process, but I’m at the point now where I create 5-6 lines each year.

4. Any words of wisdom for aspiring designers? Design what you love and what makes you happy. I believe that everything an artist creates contains a piece of his or her talent. Pour your talent into everything you make, and you’ll find your way.
